Captain Sam Heeley won the toss and, in a change to the usual strategy, chose to bowl first. This proved to be an inspired decision as thecaptain and Dominic Hayes both produced probing opening spells of bowling. Hayes was the first to strike when he had Jac Kennedy caught behind by Richard Everett to make the score 23-1. Without a run being added,…

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Orrell captain Sam Heeley saw his already under pressure batting lineup fall to 88 all out in only 36.4 overs. Having lost Luke Prescott in the first over of the game, it looked like Ben Mahoney would continue his recent promising performances at the top of the orderalongside Richard Everett. Unfortunately for Mahoney, having made a start, he was bowled when on 17 to leave the score 20-2. Everett showed his usual resilience…

Orrell’s first team succumbed to defeat away at last year’s champions Wallasey on Saturday. Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Orrell captain Sam Heeley sensed the opportunity to put pressure on the faltering defending champions. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan as Orrell were bowled out for only 114 in 41.3 overs by a Wallasey bowling attack missing last year’s competition leading wicket taker Sumit Ruikar who was unable to bowl due to injury. There was a sign of what was to come when Luke Prescott was bowled on only the second ball of the…

It was a case of so near yet so far for Orrell’s first-team at the weekend whilst the kids were alright for the second team. On Saturday, the first team welcomed neighbours Wigan to Winstanley Road on a gloriously sunny day at a picturesque and busy YMCA ground. Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Sam Heeley saw openers Luke Prescott and Andy Baybutt get the innings off to a strong start. However, they both edged John Richardson behind in quick succession to lead the score 45-2. After a slow start, Richard Everett set about building a long…

It was a busy few days of cup competition for Orrell’s first-team. On Thursday, they visited Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club in the first round of the ECB T20 competition. Batting first, the Orrell innings saw Mark Waddington set off at a rate of knots as he unleashed a barrage of boundaries against the home attack. Waddington, who had looked in good form all season without getting a big score so far, continued the onslaught as he brought up his first century of the season (and the first since returning to cricket after his professional football career) as he made…

It was a weekend of extremes for Orrell’s first team as they went from the lows of a capitulation in the league on the Saturday to a convincing victory on the road in the National Knockout trophy. The club had been stunned on Friday by the devastating news that Kathryn Wain-Mahoney- loving wife of Al and devoted mother to Oliver and Ben- had passed away after a long battle with illness. There was a sombre and reflective mood around the ground on Saturday before the first team game as the club flag was lowered to half-mast and a well-attended minute’s…

Orrell’s first team came out on the wrong side of an exciting game in the clash of the two teams with 100% records in the ECB Premier League Liverpool Competition when they visited neighbours Leigh on Saturday. Skipper Sam Heeley won the toss and elected to bat first- a decision that would usually be the correct decision but might not have been so on this occasion on a day when seam bowlers reigned supreme across the region with most games seeing lower than usual batting totals. Leigh opening bowlers Patrick Allan and Finn Hulbert bowled superbly and used the seam…

It was a Saturday of success for Orrell’s senior teams with all teams winning their matches. Sam Heeley’s first-team, buoyed by the opening-day victory away at New Brighton, welcomed newly promoted Colwyn Bay to Winstanley Road. The home team included recently arrived Sri Lankan overseas player Naveen Gunawardana in their team. The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first. This looked to be a good decision when both opening batters were back in the pavilion with the score only on 22- Andy Baybutt caught behind and Luke Prescott adjudged leg before wicket. When Mark Waddington was also adjudged…

Orrell’s first team began their 2023 Liverpool Competition ECB Premier League campaign with 6 wicket victory away at New Brighton. Missing overseas player Naveen Gunawardana (due to arrive this week) but including newcomers Matthew Parkinson and Luke Prescott in the team, skipper Sam Heeley won the toss and chose to field in what looked to be bowler friendly conditions given the recent wet weather. 16 year old Dominic Hayes opened the bowling for Orrell and struck with the last ball of the first over when Seb Botes was caught at point by Heeley. Meanwhile, at the other end, Heeley was…
